Bottom Bracket Service

Since the last few rides my BB started a creaking noise. As I know, often the sound is coming from the pedals but I serviced them already up so… BB-time =)

This will only be a minor service of “cleaning” if its possible. I think I will change the BB anyway. All along I was not satisfied with the BB30-to-20mm adapters for the shimano drive train…

These are the tools:

  • Bike Stand
  • DH-1
  • BBT-9
  • 6mm Allen key
  • Torque Wrench
  • Rubber Mallet
  • Grease
  • Synthetic Oil
  • Degreaser
  • Pan

No warranty in ANY case of damage!

As often these are the first steps: bike stand, rear wheel out, dummy hub in. Then its time for the left side drive train. First step is to loosen the two 6mm allen screws. Then it is possible to unscrew the shimano crank cap. To release the left crank arm it is necessary to open the secure pin.

After that the dread… And that is way I hate adapters. In all these gaps there is place for muck and dirt.

I cleaned everything up with synthetic oil but there is still a grate while turning. So as said this service is just a bridging because these bearings are sealed and cannot completely maintained.

Same to the right crank, a smooth degreaser cleanup. During the cleanupI recognized a worn out gasket on the right crank. This one will replaced with the new BB.

Next step is reassembly. So grease on everything: Adapters+Axle.

Very important the last gasket before the left crank arm. Also grease to the axle teeth.

Last steps of reassembly are the crank cap which will be tighten by hand first. This is to pressure the bearings. Then the two 6mm allen screws with a torque of 12-14NM. Finished.

Very easy. Next step is a new chain. Keep you posted.
